5 reasons your bed is your best friend

Think about all the items of furniture in your home — which is the most important in your life? Well, chances are it’s always going to be your bed. Not only do we spend one third of our lives asleep or trying to drift off (study), but your bed can play an important role in your life in a number of far-ranging ways you may not have considered.

In March each year, the Sleep Council runs National Bed Month, an event that raises awareness of how important it is to have a comfy bed to rest in every night. With this in mind, we decided to take a look at five of the key reasons why your bed might just be your best friend.

It boosts your health

When you sleep, your body goes into rest mode and carries out repairs from the day just passed. If you don’t get enough, this essential maintenance can’t be carried out as effectively, so you might start to feel run down rather quickly.

For more specific examples, we can look to scientific research. One study found that, after just a single night of sleep deprivation, lower levels of cells essential for the immune system were logged, showing just how quickly a lack of rest can leave you vulnerable. In addition, a lack of sleep can have long-term effects: a review of fifteen studies identified a link between poor rest and increased risk of heart disease and stroke.

And, because your bed plays such a big role in getting a solid night’s sleep by providing you with a comfy place to crash each night, it’s easy to see why you should show it some love for helping to keep you in the best of health.

It helps keep you fit and focused

It may seem counterintuitive when you first think about it, but remaining horizontal and grabbing a solid eight hours in your cosy bed every night is one of the best things you can do to increase your fitness and improve your athletic performance.

Sleep shares a close relationship with exercise, and each one can impact the other. We’ve already discussed how resting will help you recover and, if you’re getting the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep, you’re giving your body the ideal amount of time to recuperate from a session at the gym or that intensive cross-country run.

But the real advantage your bed can offer you is its ability to improve your athletic performance. A research project involving basketball players in the USA found that after healthy sleep, they were able to sprint faster, shoot more accurately, and benefitted from better reaction times. This enhancing effect on performance is another amazing benefit to thank your bed for.

It improves your memory

While most of our bodies go into rest and repair mode at night, our brains remain very active. One process that they undergo is consolidation, where they file experiences and information away to the most efficient regions, essentially revising everything learned through the day.

Research carried out at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in 2005 found that participants who learned complex finger movements after either twelve hours of wake or sleep were able to perform the task much more effectively once they had rested (Science Daily). This shows just how important a good night’s sleep can be for retaining knowledge and learning new skills.

You can give your own brain a boost by making sure you have a bed and mattress that will support you through the night. With a good period of rest in your favourite bed, you can approach the day knowing you’re well-rested and ready to learn something new.

It provides emotional support

As we discussed in a past blog post, sleep is incredibly important for preserving your mental health. Some of the most common issues, including depression, anxiety, and stress, can be exacerbated by a lack of sleep, while also being a cause of insomnia themselves in a vicious circle.

Because of this, it’s vital that you do everything possible to facilitate a good quality of sleep, such as giving yourself a restful environment where you can relax and drift off. A comfy bed can provide this, but it can also be a safe sanctuary where you can be at your most relaxed. In a way, your bed fulfils an important role delivering both practical and emotional support every night.

It can give your career a helping hand

If you have a challenging job, sleeping in a cosy bed can do wonders for your performance. After a good night’s rest, you are much more likely to be more productive and creative through the day, which can be the foundation for a successful career.

Science has also found that a good quality of sleep can reduce many of the negative aspects of your workplace performance. A medical study found that surgeons who had next to no sleep were much more error prone, with 20–30% more mistakes made. And, research from the University of Pennsylvania found that participants became easily distracted after less sleep.

Taking this into account, you can see that your bed can deliver benefits for your career, so it’s worth paying it the attention it deserves for your success.
