Silver in the Spotlight

Silver in the Spotlight

More abundant than gold, silver has long been valued as a precious metal – in part because of its numerous applications.

Alongside its common uses in jewellery, tableware and coinage, it also has a less publicised but very long history of use by the medical profession. As far back as 400BC, Hippocrates (‘The Father of Medicine’ – hence The Hippocratic Oath) described its antimicrobial properties and taught that it healed wounds. It gained in popularity and was widely used in the treatment of everything from heart conditions to, believe it or not, bad breath!

In the Middle Ages, the use of silver utensils and goblets are thought to have given the Upper Class who used them a bluish skin tone – quite possibly resulting in the term ‘blue-blood’. Interestingly, blue-bloods were much less likely to succumb to the plagues of the time and it’s likely that the phrase ‘born with a silver spoon in his mouth’ was originally meant to describe someone lucky enough to have health, rather than wealth.

The Phonecians (1500-300BC) are recorded as having stored water and other liquids in silver coated bottles to discourage contamination by microbes. Much later, the armies fighting during the Napoleonic wars (1803-1815), and both World Wars continued this practice in order to clean the water they had gathered from streams and rivers and make it safe to drink.

However, it wasn’t until 1893 that the antibacterial effectiveness of various metals was formally recognised. Of all these metals, silver was found to have the most effective antibacterial action coupled with the least toxicity to animal cells (Guggenbichler et al., 1999). It is now used widely in medical dressings, surgical masks and as an antibiotic coating in various medical devices such as breathing tubes.

Dormeo has put these antibacterial, anti-fungal and antimicrobial properties of silver to unique use.
