The Differences between a Mattress topper and a Mattress protector

Mattress toppers and protectors - what's the difference? If you aren’t in the know, this could be a difficult question.

Here at Dormeo, we know (nearly) everything to do with making your night’s sleep more comfortable. But sometimes that means we take our knowledge about all the different products for granted. We frequently get queries about toppers and protectors and, more often than not, these questions are based on a misunderstanding about the two products.

This article will go through both mattress toppers and protectors, helping you understand what they are and how they are used to help your sleep. Our guide on Mattress Toppers has more information about the different kinds of topper and its benefits.

What is a Mattress Topper?

A mattress topper being put to use on a mattress

A mattress topper is a removable thin mattress-like layer that is put over the top of your ordinary mattress for an added comfort boost, which can often make an older mattress feel brand new. The goal of these toppers is to enhance the current feel of your mattress, or to help add life to your old failing mattress.  Whatever your reasons, a mattress topper is a less expensive and great alternative to buying a new mattress.

Mattress toppers can also be used instead of mattresses. While it won’t be as comfortable as a proper mattress or a mattress with topper; our toppers can be used as a temporary bed. Easy to roll up, toppers could really help during a camping trip or when finding somewhere comfy to sleep may be a bit tricky.

It can be difficult to know which is the best mattress topper and what to look for when buying one. It’s key to remember that one person’s ideal might not be right for you. There are a range of options to pick from that will suit different sleeping positions and will support those with back or joint problems and prevent you from waking up throughout the night.

Mattress Topper - what do you need?

Depending if you are a side, back or stomach sleeper, you will need different things from your topper. You should take into consideration if you have a bad back, or have a comfort issue during your sleep. The things to think about when buying a topper for your needs are:

  • What are the materials used?
  • How dense is it?
  • What’s the thickness of the topper?
  • What kind of mattress are you aiming to put it on?

What is a Mattress Protector?

A mattress protector is exactly what it sounds like - a protective layer that covers your mattress much like a sheet.

There are a few reasons why you might need a mattress protector. As well as protecting against moisture and bacteria, anti-allergy mattress protectors can help fight dust mites. More than 10 million people in the UK suffer from hayfever, and many find these symptoms worsen at night. If you find yourself reacting to allergies during the night and struggling to sleep, a protector could help alleviate some of the symptoms.

Your bed isn’t just used for sleeping; it can also be a place where you just relax in comfort and, maybe, you eat and drink in bed. A mattress protector does exactly what its name suggests – it protects your mattress. A protector can literally protect your mattress from any unexpected spills and stains. Stains can (and will) occur on your mattress over the years as it becomes well used. If you have spent lots of money on your mattress, you might want to protect your investment as much as possible.

The top layer of the protector is usually slightly padded to add a little extra softness and comfort while giving you peace of mind that your mattress is protected from anything that could ruin it.

As you can see, there is a big difference between mattress toppers and protectors. Hopefully this has cleared up any confusion and helped you get a better understanding of which product you might need.

Dormeo has a selection of quality mattress protectors, each one offering mattress protection with the beneficial infusions of different materials (such as silver) and ingredients (such as Aloe Vera) to help you sleep better.
